8IGHT Air filter tip

Hello everyone,

This week as I get ready for the trip to the 2017 Fall Brawl at Badlands RC Supercross in Myrtle Beach, SC, I wanted to give everyone a little tip for installing a new air filter (LOSA9151) on any TLR 8IGHT Nitro vehicles. Apply a small amount of black grease (TLR77000) to the front and rear of your air filter to maximize the filtered air going into your engine. If you’re at the Fall Brawl December 1st – 3rd stop by the JConcepts tent and say HI.

New for the 22 Series - Aluminum Trail Inserts

Good Day Racers!

We've been working hard to improve the durability of the trail inserts for the newest 22 spindles.  These spindles have been included on the 22 4.0, 22SCT 3.0, 22T 3.0, 22T 4.0 and the 22 4.0 SR, and have adjustable trail (2mm-4mm) and different ackermann inserts for adjustable ackermann feel as well.

On occassion, we've seen the outer bearings pop through the inner lip of outside trail insert, particularly on impacts that hit the outside of the axle directly.  We have since released improved inserts and spindles, both of which help increase the durability of the molded parts - those are available now.  We also worked on Aluminum versions of the trail inserts in parallel to give the ultimate option for durability.

Available now are:

- TLR334048, Spindle Insert Set, Aluminum, 3mm Trail: All 22
- TLR334049, Spindle Insert Set, Aluminum, 2/4mm Trail: All 22

Each of these includes two machined aluminum trail inserts per package, as the aluminum inserts are only needed for the outer bearings on the left and right spindles.  We recommend continuing to use the molded composite inserts for the inner bearings on each spindle.

Hello everyone,

This past weekend, I attended the 2017 Fall Brawl in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and I had a great result in both ebuggy and nitro buggy classes. The track was super fun and it had super high grip levels at times. Today, I’m off to Leisure Hours Raceway for this year’s horizon classic. Upon my return, I will have my nitro setup posted from the Fall Brawl, but in the meantime here is my winning TLR 8IGHT E 4.0 setup.

Hello everyone,

I’m finally getting caught up from last weekend’s trip to the Midwest classic at Leisure Hours Raceway. Good weekend overall with Dakotah Phend showcasing his talents in the 2wd and 4wd mod classes as well as other TLR drivers doing the same in the 17.5 buggy, 13.5 4wd, 4x4 SCT, and Stadium Truck classes. Along with the great racing action, the TLR/Horizon Hobby crew hosted a Q&A session and raised money for the Hobbies for Good. This week, I would like to share my TLR 22T 4.0 setup from this event.

16mm EVO Shock Springs for 8ight 4.0

Howdy Gents!

Today we released new springs for the 8ight 4.0 buggies that we are referring to as EVO springs.  This is a full line of springs that are closer together in rate for finer tuning as well as a constant coil diameter and longer in length.  Between the constant coil diameter and the frequency we have chosen for these, these handle much better in all conditions we have found, especially when it comes to bumps and landing.  They are part numbers TLR344016 through TLR344028.

There are a couple of changes needed in order to run these springs on your TLR 8ight vehicles.  You will need to use the spring cups that come with the shock ends in LOSA5435 that were for the older 1.0 and 2.0 vehicles.

You will also need to flip your shock collars over so the lip is on the top.

Here are a couple shots of the entire line.  You will notice the coloring to be a bit different so it is easy to tell that you are running these.

Thank you for reading and good luck out there with your racing!

Thank you for a great 2017!

Hello everyone,

Today I would like to pass on an added bit of security for your TLR 22T 4.0. After your front body clips are fairly used they could come off in a hard crash. TLR Team driver Dalton Myers shows us on his TLR 22T 4.0 how to combat this by pushing the body clip pass it’s standard position and using the main loop as the new stop for the body clips.

Hello everyone,

Last weekend was the first JConcepts SuperCup of 2018 hosted by Beachline raceway with a great turn out of 240 entries. Beachline is in Cocoa, Florida about two hours from Tampa where I’m located, and is the only turf track in the state. I had a very productive weekend in both 2wd and 4wd but I had the most success in the 4wd class with my TLR 22-4 2.0 bringing home the win with a last lap pass. Here is the link to my setup: TLR 22-4 2.0 Beachline setup Photo credit: JConcepts

*I forgot to add that I used +3.5 rear hubs in the setup sheet

New 22-4 2.0 Setup

Hello Racers!

During our recent testing in preparation for Reedy Race, team driver Reno Savoya got all of our 22-4 2.0s' way more dialed in with an outside the box setup idea.  After showing us how good it was with his speed on the track while running at Travis Brock's SDRC Raceway, Dakotah and I both gave it a try and we instantly knew it was an improvement for the car - and pretty much the rest of the team switched over during the Reedy Race.  What was this magical setup change... glad you should ask!

Reno deep in wrench mode!

We've found that running a ball diff in the rear, paired with a gear diff in the front, was a great way to maximize how the car drives.  The gear diff in the front allows the diff to 'free up' off power to help the car turn in and rotate quicker, then 'lock up' on power to pull the front end out of the turns.  The ball diff in the rear, gives the 22-4 the stability, consistency, and predictability of a ball diff setup.  Really, the front gear diff and rear ball diff setup gives you the best of both worlds, without the negatives of either.  Even the ball diff life-span in the rear is improved with the gear diff up front.

So here are some details we 'fine-tuned' after making this change.  With the ball diff adding consistency in the rear, we found that we could run the front diff with thinner oil to improve steering.  We're pretty much all running 30,000cs oil in the front diff, so I'd suggest starting here.  If you want a little less aggressive steering, try moving up to 40,000cs.  For the ball diff, we've been running it set very similar to a 2wd 'normal' diff setting, about 1 full rotation.  We have found that running the diff too tight can make the rear feel a little less consistent, almost like a solid axle.

If you have the 22-4 2.0, you'll need the parts listed below to try the ball diff setup in the rear:

1x   TLR232017  Outdrive Set: 22-4
1x   TLR232026  Diff Service Kit, Tungsten Balls: 22-4
1x   TLR237000  5x8x2.5mm Bearings (2)
2x   The black bearing spacers that come with the 22-4 2.0 kits, in the tuning parts bag*

* These can also be found in TLR231043 and TLR231044

Give this setup a shot, we're confident you'll like it!

Race on!

Howdy Folks,

I wanted to just make a quick post here on a new item we released a few weeks ago now.  These are TLR344015 5MM Moly Rod End Set:8B, 8T.  These can be used on any of our 8th scale vehicles using the 5mm turnbuckles.  These are out of a new material and are more free than the original LOSA6047 and will not need to be squeezed when the temperature changes.  Thats it for today gents!

Good luck out there to those attending the nitro challenge.  We will be out there under the tents so if you need anything or have any questions or just feel like saying hello, please do.

22 Spring Cup Modification

$

Hello Everyone,

I thought I'd share a very easy modification I came up with to help get the 22 vehicles more adjustment for ride height.  Especially with the 22 4.0, recent setups have a lot of the race team running cars around 1500-1510g, making lower ride heights close with fully stock parts.  This modification is simple, quick and requires no additional parts.

Step 1 - Remove your rear spring cup.  The material that will be removed is shown in the image below marked with a silver sharpie.  Essentially, we are going to remove the lip that usually rests atop of the shock eyelet, which allows the spring cup to slider down a few more millimeters.

Step 2 - Remove the material from the spring cup, using a 6.2mm drill bit, either with a drill or a Dremel.  You can also use a grinding bit.

Below is an image of a modified spring cup on the right, with a stock spring cup on the left.

Thanks guys!

TLR Slipper adjustment

Hello everyone,

This week, I would like to talk about how to adjust your slipper on your TLR vehicles. The first and most important is making sure that the slipper is set loose and your diff is tight and broken in correctly before you attempt to find the correct setting for your slipper. If the slipper is too tight, you could cause damage to your diff even before you hit the track. After making sure your slipper is loose, hold both rear tires with your radio and car on and give the car a quick stab of the throttle and you should be able to hear the slipper slip. Keep tightening the slipper at half turn increments until the front tires come off the ground about an inch. This should be a good starting point for most tracks.

Hello everyone,

This week I would like to share a new carpet setup by TLR’s very own Frank Root. Frank made the trip to SCVRC (newly transformed over to a carpet track) back in February for “The Series” event round three. Frank grabbed the TQ and the win at this event and he has posted his setup. If you're looking to do some carpet racing with your TLR 22 4.0 this is a very good starting point for any carpet surface.

TLR 8IGHT Aluminum clutch shoe maintenance

Hello everyone,

This week I would like to talk about Aluminum clutch shoe maintenance for your Nitro TLR 8IGHT rides. A TLR 8IGHT clutch can take a good amount of running before maintenance is needed. Here is what I would do before a big event and before the main event to keep my clutch in good working order. First picture is my Aluminum clutch shoe after about an hour of racing. Second picture is after maintenance prepping for my main. In the second picture, you can see that I have used a dremel on all three edges and I used some scotch-brite to clean the top of the clutch shoe. This will help your clutch work correctly and gives you a consistent feel throughout your race.

P.S. This maintenance can also be done to your composite clutch shoe as well.

Building/filling your shocks after traveling to an event.

Hello everyone,

This week I would like talk about building/filling your shocks after traveling to an event. As seen on Facebook and Instagram, almost every Pro or semi Pro racer before a long trip will have their shocks off their cars. This is so when they arrive to an event they can build/fill their shocks in the right environment that racing will happen. Shocks can build up pressure on a long trip, like on an airplane or in a hot/cold car ride. So just keep this in mind when traveling to your next event to get the most out of your RC car’s performance.

Hello everyone,

This week, I wanted to let everyone know that TLR will be doing a live Facebook video each week. TLR would like for our consumers to be more connected with each other by talking racing, products, and much more with feedback. TLR’s team manager, Kevin Gahan, runs down this week’s first episode by talking 1/8th scale with TLR’s Evo Springs, Long Universal setup, and Servo saver setup. Please stay tuned for exact day of the week and time for each week’s episode.

Camber

$

Hello everyone,

This week, I would like to touch base on camber. First, you will need a good camber gauge to make sure you're getting the precise measurement. TLR, Losi (LOSA99172), and JConcepts (JCO22831) all have great camber gauges for the most accurate readings. Second, make sure your vehicle is at the correct ride height before checking/setting camber. Third is setting camber; a good starting point for most conditions is -1. A good rule of thumb with camber is less camber (going to 0 or +1) gives you more side grip in lower traction conditions, and more camber (going to -2 or more) gives you less side grip in higher traction conditions.
